Tesla officially began its India operations with the launch of its first Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on July 15, 2025, marking a historic moment for the global EV giant. After years of anticipation and regulatory challenges, Tesla has made its long-awaited entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle (EV) markets.
The launch signals a strong commitment by Tesla to explore opportunities in India’s clean energy and mobility sectors while expanding its global presence.
Tesla’s First Showroom in Mumbai
The newly opened Tesla Experience Centre is located on the ground floor of a commercial tower in BKC and spans approximately 4,000 square feet. Tesla reportedly leased the premium space at Rs. 900 per square foot, with a monthly rent nearing Rs. 35 lakh.
According to media reports, Tesla hosted a formal event to inaugurate the facility, inviting press and industry insiders to witness its official debut in India.
What Tesla Brought to India
Before the launch, Tesla imported a range of EVs, chargers, and accessories worth over $1 million (around Rs. 8.57 crore) from the US and China. This included a fleet of six Tesla Model Y vehicles, each valued at $32,500 (approx. Rs. 28 lakh). The long-range versions were priced higher, at around $46,000 (approx. Rs. 39 lakh).
Additionally, Tesla brought in several Superchargers, which are expected to be strategically installed across major urban locations to support its charging infrastructure in India. The imported vehicles are subject to an import duty of about 70%, although future government incentives or tax policy changes may influence pricing.
Future Models & Affordable Options
There’s widespread speculation that Tesla is working on launching a more affordable EV for the Indian market, targeting a price point under $25,000 (approx. Rs. 22 lakh). Currently, the Model 3 is Tesla’s most affordable car globally, starting at $40,000 (approx. Rs. 35 lakh).
What’s Next for Tesla in India
After the successful opening of the Mumbai Experience Centre, Tesla is expected to launch its second showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity complex. Sales are projected to begin in Q3 2025, with the company initially focusing on Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi.
This move positions Tesla to tap into India’s rapidly evolving EV ecosystem. As competition increases and demand grows, Tesla’s entry is likely to push innovation, infrastructure development, and consumer interest in electric mobility.
